Message from the Department Head

Congratulations to Alexis Kiel as she took First Place in the Contract Seating category of the AWS Fresh Woods Competition in Las Vegas! We are proud of both Alexis and Darcy McDonough as they represented us well at the competition as finalists. It is gratifying to see our furniture designs recognized in these arenas (competing against others from North America) and when students are able to attend and receive feedback from judges from a wide variety of backgrounds and interests, the learning opportunity is tremendous. Congratulations also go to Professor David Brown who was the professor of the furniture design workshop/studio where Alexis envisioned and created this award-winning piece "Leaf2".

I just returned from a two-week vacation to my hometown (Pullman, Washington) and to McCall, Idaho; it is always refreshing to visit the generations of both sides of our family and to reconnect with family and friends. Wheat harvest was just beginning and the rolling hills of the Palouse were golden, clouds (when present) were white and puffy, and the sky was crystal blue.

Now our focus is on the beginning of a new academic year with all the anticipation and excitement that brings. I hope you are ready to return to Manhattan (if you have been away) for a year promising to challenge and engage you. I hope you have experienced a time to refresh no matter where you have been. We (IAPD Faculty, Staff, Students) will meet collectively on Monday, August 26 in the Pierce Commons from 1:00-1:45. Later that afternoon is the All-College meeting in Forum Hall (Student Union) at 3:30. Be sure to attend both of these important meetings!

One additional note, some of you have inquired about when you can move into your studio spaces - the first day you have studio will be when you can move in. This keeps it fair to those who are not in Manhattan early and allows your professors to indicate any preferences for the studio arrangement.

Involvement Opportunities

If you are an IAPD student, then be sure to respond to the DesignIntelligence survey for students before August 30 - let your voice be heard! Follow this link and indicate your responses.

Consider ways you will become involved this coming year - what are you passionate about in our fields? There are many opportunities for you to be involved, serving on College committees to represent students of IAPD, serving in student organizations, serving as an officer or representative of the IAPD Student Council, and many more. Respond as opportunities become available and if you don't see what you are interested in, seek further!
