Note from the Department

This week we have much to celebrate and much to anticipate. Our team of students took home 2 of the 6 awards at the annual IIDA Color + Couture event in Kansas City Friday evening. Model Rachel Botten stole the show in the tribal outfit enhanced with headdress and energetic "walk" on the runway. Congratulations to all who helped make this such a success. IAPD was well represented at the event, not only in the audience, but the teams and models as well highlighted IAPD alumni's work.

IDEC MW Regional Conference

Design + Making: Process Inextricably Linked is the theme of the IDEC Midwest Regional Conference hosted by IAPD this week. The kickoff event features Jordan Mozer, the founder and co-owner of Jordan Mozer & Associates, Limited (JMA); APDesign Distinguished Lecture Series and keynote speaker for the 2014 IDEC Regional Conference presenting "Walk-In Poems".

IDEC is the only organization in North America representing Interior Design Educators, and the leading venue for the publication, presentation, and dissemination of interior design scholarship.

Color and Couture

This Friday, members of K-State's IIDA chapter attended and competed in the annual IIDA Color and Couture fashion show hosted by IIDA Mid-America.

This event challenges groups to create garments of high fashion out of samples from their product manufacturer. This year our students were sponsored by Bentley Carpet and created a garment with the theme of "tribal."

They were awarded the "People's Choice" award as well as the "Judges Choice" award. Of the teams competing, only 5 teams were represented by student teams and the remaining 30 teams from professional design firms from Kansas City.

Congratulations to the K-State IIDA chapter and everyone who worked on the IAPD outfit.

Jordan Mozer Charrette

This Thursday evening is the Jordan Mozer lecture. It will be held in the Hemisphere Room in the Hale Library at 7pm.

As part of his visit, Jordan is kind enough to share his time and expertise to conducting a design charrette with the IAPD students. He will give a brief introduction about the Charrette for any interested students (all levels) on Wednesday October 15th at 5.30PM at Seaton 307.

The Charrette itself will take place on Thursday morning from 9-noon with a gallery review at the end of the event at Seaton 104.

We hope you are all able to join in this exciting opportunity!

Faculty Awards

Congratulations to Vibha on receiving an incentive grant to "Support the development of linkages to establish an affordable, short-term study tour of Greece and develop faculty exchange and research opportunities with American College of Greece." We look forward to seeing the work you do with this project!

Urban Land Institute Design Competition

The Urban Land Institute Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition gives graduate student teams the opportunity to devise a comprehenisive design and development program for a real, large-scale full site. The winning team will receive $50,000 and the finalist team $10,000.

The kick off meeting will take place Thursday, October 16th at 5:30pm in Seaton 104. If you have questions, please contact Jason Brody at jbrody@ksu.edu.

Class Updates

2nd year students are beginning their final projects in Dustin's class. This week they are taking a break from their final project (housing of the future!) to take part in the annual pumpkin carving for the Manhattan zoo.

Staying Safe

There have been reports recently of individuals attempting to harm and steal from individuals around campus recently. Please stay safe as days are getting shorter and it is getting dark earlier.

Please use the buddy system when leaving the building after dark. If you have to leave the building alone, remember to take advantage of Wildcat Walk by calling 785-395-SAFE. This free service operates 24/7 and an escort will meet you and walk you to another on-campus destination or up to two blocks off campus.
