Department Head Notes

As we each get ready for the holiday season and finishing up the semester, I wish you the warmth of friends and family and a bit of rest and relaxation! We have certainly enjoyed a busy but productive semester.

If you see Emma Montgomery, congratulate her on being named one of 5 finalists in the Steelcase NEXT Competition! Nearly 800 students across North America participated in the competition, with 98 entries submitted for judging (maximum of 2 entries per academic program allowed). Emma will fly to Grand Rapids to present her project in early January so stay tuned.....

A couple of reminders as you leave Seaton for the holiday: clean up (use the boy scout maxim of leaving a place better than you found it) around your desk and studio common spaces; back up your computer to an external disc or drive; remove any food from refrigerators; and travel safely after a good night's sleep. A random act of kindness might also be a good idea at some point over the next week or so.

Thank you, each of you, for helping IAPD be such a special place to learn, explore, and share.

Kathy

Studio Clean Up

A gentle reminder to all students:

Please clean up your studio area before you leave for the semester. There are tours occurring over break and we want to give a good impression. This includes old projects and materials.

Please make sure you clean up all trash and recycling and put them in their appropriate containers. If you need additional trash bags, please contact Mary and she will help you out.

Fourth Years

In anticipation of your departure for the spring semester, all items need to be removed from your studio before you leave for the semester. Everything should be out no later than December 19th. The only exception to this are the furniture pieces you just finished, which should be left for Open House purposes.

If you have questions, please come and see Mary or Jayna and they can help you out.

Have a great holiday!

IIDA Student Design Competition

IIDA's 2014 Student Design Competition is focused on evolving the concept of the open office to offer employees' a workplace that encourages health, well-being, collaboration and productivity.

Students are encouraged to investigate how the modern employee works and what elements are required to increase workplace well-being, thereby increasing productivity and job satisfaction. Think about all the things that a well-designed office dedicated to well-being would include - mobility, privacy, natural light, exercise opportunities, outdoor access. Then, incorporate it with the standard functions of an open office - productivity, collaboration, camaraderie, reduced office footprint, corporate cultural, breaking down corporate hierarchy.
