Landscape Architecture and
Regional & Community Planning
Message from the Department Head
The disciplines of landscape architecture, regional and community planning and community development shape the world we live in. Our department offers students on-campus accredited professional programs in landscape architecture and planning as well as an online community development program.
Our students and faculty are evidence-driven, focused on three areas of planning and design:
Critical inquiry and creative thinking
Community design and engagement
Unique in our configuration, we offer an unparalleled opportunity for students to work across the scales of design and planning from site design to regional planning. Integration of faculty research and creative activities into classes allows students to partner with faculty on projects exploring current topics in our disciplines. The power of our approach is demonstrated in the regional and national rankings we have received from Planetizen and DesignIntelligence.
After completing foundational classes in their chosen discipline, each student completes an independent master's report or thesis. These studies are a hallmark of our department, demonstrating the cumulative scope of each student’s education and internship experience and providing opportunity for in-depth research, planning and design in an area of specialization. Students are guided by a multi-disciplinary committee of faculty from their discipline as well as others. In recent years, faculty from the Colleges of Agriculture, Arts & Sciences, Engineering, Education and Human Ecology have served on our master's committees. Wicked planning and design problems lie at the intersection of different disciplines. Our interdisciplinary approach leads to inspired and thoughtful solutions for the future.
We are in the studio, in the field, online and in communities. We look forward to sharing our programs with you.
