Synopsis: The economic pressure on building today creates a reductive environment that promotes isolation and discourages interaction between the building and its context. By deploying tactics that simultaneously reduce cost and enhance interaction, EM's work proposes new models for urban engagement and social synergy. Their solutions-based approach to design elevates place and celebrates function while extending the boundaries of Urban Interaction.
Scott Erdy pursues a methodology where form embodies purpose, and sense of place is revealed through the careful intersection of programmatic relationships and cultural significance. Since establishing Erdy McHenry Architecture in 1999, Scott’s design work has received numerous accolades from the local and national press as well as more than 25 state, local and national awards. Beginning with the September 2001 cover story of Architecture Magazine featuring the Southern Poverty Law Center and most recently the 2013 July Cover of Architectural Record highlighting the Cornell Teaching Dairy Barn, Erdy’s work has been recognized for the embodiment of cultural significance and utilitarian beauty.

Lecture Title: Principal
Urbanski was invited by the landscape architecture and regional & community planning department to present examples from his work at Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates Inc. He will discuss the growing recognition that great landscapes are key components in the making great cities livable and critical to their economic competitiveness. He will talk about the ongoing evolution of urban infrastructure, as derelict industrial sites — former margins — become the foundations for new parks, and about the way that landscape imagination guides the integration of form, program and experience.
Matthew Urbanski is a Principal of MVVA (Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates Inc.) where he has worked for over two decades. Along with his partners Michael Van Valkenburgh and Laura Solano, he has been part of the project leadership for almost every major project the firm has completed. He has planned and designed landscapes in the United States, Canada, and France, including waterfronts, parks, college campuses, sculpture gardens, and private gardens. Collaborating with Michael Van Valkenburgh, he was a lead designer of Brooklyn Bridge Park in Brooklyn, New York, Segment 5 of Hudson River Park in New York City, Alumnae Valley at Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, Allegheny Riverfront Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Teardrop Park in New York City, Mill Race Park in Columbus, Indiana. He frequently uses plantings in dramatic ways that create a distinctive complement to an urban or architectural context.
AICP members can earn Certification Maintenance (CM) credits for this activity. When CM credits are available, they are noted at the end of an activity description. More information about AICP's CM program can be found at www.planning.org/cm.
