Classroom & Studio Use Policies

Ten Studio Freedoms

  • You are free to imagine, to consider, to question, to debate, to design, and to make things in your studio. It is a learning and working environment.
  • You are free to use your studio workspace during and after class hours for producing the creative work required by studio courses and your instructors.
  • You are free to do work that creates debris, if you clean up during and afterwards. (Remember, there will be computers, other electronic equipment, and classmates susceptible to dust, aerosol sprays, and volatile paints and adhesives. Many of these can be toxic and must be used only in properly ventilated and controlled environments, such as the college model shop or paint booth. Going outside to the alley, lawn, or sidewalk is not acceptable.) Do not make a mess that you cannot clean up with a broom and dustpan.
  • You are free to use your studio space 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. However, each student has a responsibility to keep studio doors locked and his/her own workspace secure.
  • You are free to use your studio workspace as your study center for other school work or as a place to work on non-studio projects outside of studio class hours. You are free to talk, play music (via headphones), display personal work, move around, and meet with fellow students or faculty in your studio so long as you do not disturb, harass or otherwise interfere with the legitimate studio activities of your classmates.
  • You are free to keep and use your computer and other personal possessions that you require in studio which fit within your assigned work area. The department and college, however, accept no responsibility for the security of personal possessions.
  • You are free to use, in a safe and appropriate manner, the desks and stools, electrical power, digital networking, lights, display areas and chalkboards, printers, and other services and equipment provided in the studio. Lights must be on when studio is occupied.
  • You are free to share in the responsibility for the maintenance, supervised enhancement and incremental improvement of your studio space.  Report repair and maintenance needs to Lisa Shubert in the Dean's Office.
  • You are free to speak with faculty, student organization representatives and/or department or college administrators about problems or needs in studio spaces.
  • You are free to exercise good judgment in the use and care of the studio and other building facilities, and to expect the same from your classmates. At the start of every school year, we have the opportunity to add to the legacy of our college and to build a studio culture where not only hard work, high standards, beautiful products, and time management but also good work space habits are a requisite part of the studio ethos for everyone.

Building/Facilities Guidelines

  • Students enrolled in the College of Architecture, Planning & Design are provided with studio space and furnishings to complete their course work. Please exhibit behavior that exemplifies high professional, personal, and academic standards when using the space and equipment provided to you. Student welfare and safety are paramount. If your behavior disregards the safety and welfare of any students or creates undue disruption of academic processes, privileges may be revoked.
  • The amount, type, and size of furnishings that students may have in their studio spaces are determined by each department. Always use care and respect, as well as follow departmental guidelines, in moving and placing furnishings to avoid damaging floors, walls, doors, windows, stairs, elevators, desks, and stools. Rubber wheeled carts, felt pads to protect furniture feet, and other assistance are available to help you. Soft rubber casters must be installed on your personal chairs, stools, and computer boxes before they are placed in studios.
  • The state fire marshal and K-State’s Division of Public Safety mandate the following restrictions due to serious potential fire hazards. Departments may have additional limitations.
  • All space dividers and bookshelves shall be limited to five feet in height to provide clear visual access to fire exits and proper air circulation. The Department of Landscape Architecture/Regional & Community Planning does not allow space dividers and bookshelves in its studios.
  • Studio aisle spaces leading to studio door(s) must remain clear and be no less than 36 inches wide.
  • Space heaters, televisions, refrigerators, microwaves, and coffee makers are not permitted in studios.
  • Couches and upholstered seating, other than that furnished by the College, are not permitted.
  • Extension cords, if they must be used, must be heavy duty (14 gauge) and grounded, used singly, and not cross passageways.
  • If you must paint your model, please use a brush or non-aerosol spray. Spray painting is permitted only in our ventilated spray booth.  Spray painting is not permitted elsewhere inside campus buildings or on sidewalks, steps, pavement, or vegetation outside campus buildings.
  • Please park bicycles on the racks provided outside the building.
  • Combustible materials should not be draped or hung in studios. This includes blinds, tack surfaces, cardboard or foam core panels, or curtains.
  • When installing a display, a minimum hallway width of 44 inches must be maintained. Please locate display materials more than 10 feet from doors and stairs.
  • Smoking is prohibited in campus buildings and outside of campus buildings within 30 feet of marked building entrances. 
  • Please get adequate sleep at home. You need to rest to stay healthy and productive, and your bed will be much more comfortable than the floor or your table.
  • Use networking and computer cables as installed in the studios. Network and computer cabling should drop straight down to the computer they are being used for. Please do not drape, stretch, or spaghetti cabling and cords across aisles or other students’ work areas.
  • Use the tack surfaces (with push pins) provided (rather than walls in studios and halls) to display your projects in areas designated by your department.
  • General information about College and campus events should be posted on the tack surfaces identified in each area of the building for that purpose. Please do not post such notices on tack surfaces used for crits or displaying projects, or on other surfaces such as glass, metal frames, walls or doors.
  • Keep glass windows, metal frames, doors, and walls clean, holeless, tapeless, and peel-free.
  • Please be careful not to pour something down the studio or restroom sinks that will clog them.
  • If there is a sink stoppage, a plumbing leak, roof leak, air conditioning condensation, rainwater on the floor, or some other situation that could cause serious immediate damage to property or people, immediately contact Lisa Shubert during weekdays; if this occurs during weekends or evenings, contact the campus police at (785) 532-6412 who will assess the situation and arrange for the necessary emergency repair.
  • Help the College keep up with normal wear and tear by reporting broken or malfunctioning doors, windows, air conditioning, heating, lights, or elevators to Lisa Shubert. Also, please report promptly to your departmental office the theft of personal or College property or if College property is moved without authorization from its designated location.
  • Please contact the College’s Computing Services immediately to report networking or connectivity problems. Please do not attempt to move or work with the cabling as installed in hallways and studios; that is the College’s responsibility.
  • Regularly use the trash containers provided. More trash containers are available from your department office upon request if needed. Keep the floor around your desk neat so the custodians can clean daily. Treat the custodial staff with respect, and let them know how much we appreciate their efforts to keep our building neat and clean.
  • The College’s administrators are truly interested in thoughtful, constructive suggestions by students. Please contact your departmental office or the Dean’s Office if we can better serve your instructional needs with regard to the building and its furnishings.
  • The use of a College locker is a privilege extended to students enrolled in environmental design studios. The use of a locker is only for the semester the student is enrolled in ENVD. Nothing may be left in lockers between semesters or during the summer. All locker contents will be removed and disposed of immediately after finals in December and May. If a student drops studio during the semester, his/her locker contents must be removed immediately. The College and Environmental Design Studies Program are not responsible for anything left in lockers.
