Timothy A. Schuler

Timothy Schuler is the director of K-State’s Institute for Community Design & Research, which provides design and planning services to communities across the state in order to address urgent and systemic challenges.

Prior to this role, Schuler worked as an independent writer, researcher, and design critic, exploring issues connected to housing, infrastructure, and climate resilience. From 2016 to 2026, he was a contributing editor at Landscape Architecture Magazine. In 2024 he served as the Critic in Residence in Landscape Architecture at Places Journal in San Francisco.

As a fifth-generation Kansan and an alumnus of K-State’s A.Q. Miller School of Media and Communication, Tim’s work has frequently focused on rural communities and the role of design and culture in shaping resilient futures. His writing has appeared in The Atlantic, Bloomberg CityLab, The Architectural Review, Dwell, Metropolis, Places Journal, Monocle, the Symphony in the Flint Hills Field Journal, The New Territory, and FLUX Hawaiʻi, among others.

His work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Bradford Williams Medal, the John M. Collier Award for Forest History Journalism, and various honors from the Society of Professional Journalists. His 2019 essay, “The Middle of Everywhere,” was included on a list of the most notable nature writing in The Best American Science and Nature Writing.

In the spring, Tim can be found volunteering with the burn crew at Konza Prairie Biological Station.
