Dr. Shakhawat H. Tanim is an Assistant Professor in Kansas State University’s Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional & Community Planning and a faculty member of the Kansas Water Institute. Tanim’s research connects watershed-scale environmental change and infrastructure performance to community-scale outcomes. He translates geospatial data science into decision-ready tools for risk analysis and planning, water-infrastructure resilience, cascading system failures, and access to essential services. Integrating GIScience, spatial and network modeling, optimization, and machine learning, he helps agencies and communities identify vulnerabilities, compare tradeoffs, and evaluate practical interventions. His work also extends to disaster evacuation behavior, transportation planning, and rural public health, including the strategic placement of mobile health clinics in underserved communities. Before joining K-State, Tanim was a postdoctoral fellow at Clemson University, where he led geospatial modeling for interdisciplinary projects supported by USACE, CDC, and NIH. He previously worked as a geospatial scientist at Kimley-Horn in Florida. Tanim earned his Ph.D. in Geography, Environmental Science & Policy from the University of South Florida, and a Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. His teaching focuses on sustainability and resilience, geospatial sciences, watershed planning, and socio-ecological systems.
