Associate Professor, Vibhavari Jani, was named to the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) Board of Directors.
4th Year Student Honorable Mention IAPD 4th year student, Alex Marschman, was named an Honorable Mention for the Gensler Brinkmann Scholarship. The Gensler Brinkmann Scholarship Fund celebrates a commitment to nurturing new design talent by recognizing outstanding interior design students. Candidates were evaluated based upon their analysis and problem solving skills, design development, graphic presentation, communication skills and passion.
5th Year Student wins IDSA National Student Merit Award
IAPD student, Zach Manuel, won the IDSA Student Chapter National Student Merit Award. It was an industrial design based work/portfolio competition. Zach's portfolio/presentation included a furniture piece he designed with photos of the process in the IAPD shop. He will go on to compete in the regional event at UIUC.
IAPD Student Lands First Prize in NEXT Competition
Caleb Amundson, a fourth-year IAPD student was awarded top honors as the finalist in the NEXT Student Design Competition. Amundson won the $2500 award and another $2500 for APDesign. He also won a custom-made Think Chair from the competition's sponsor, Steelcase Design Alliances.
3rd Year Mobile Environment Project A Success
IAPD 3rd year students embarked on a 6 week near environment/mobile environment project to transform an El Dorado National executive coach van into a mobile work and relaxation center. The students created individual and group work relaxation zones within the interior. They sketched, created renderings, and designed full scale foam core models which were then installed in the executive van.
2nd Year IAPD Students Joined Forces With Sunset Zoo
For the fifth year in a row our students have worked with Sunset Zoo on a Pumpkin Carving Contest. IAPD students assisted children who are enrolled in the zoo's child care center who ranged in age from 2 1/2 to 5 years of age. The kids designed and carved pumpkins inspired by animals at the zoo. The pumpkins were then showcased at the annual Spooktacular event in Manhattan.
Regional Competition
5th year IAPD student, Erin Heiden, was on the winning team for the 2015 Design Wars competition sponsored by the Mid-America Chapter of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) in Kansas City. Students from different universities were assigned to teams. Each team had three hours to produce a spatial design, select finishes, and create a presentation of their concept for a panel of industry leaders.
IAPD Student Awarded PAVE Scholarship
Rebecca Keating, a third year IAPD student, has been awarded a scholarship from the Planning and Visual Education Partnership. Only a handful of design students throughout the country are awarded a scholarship from PAVE which has a mission to invest in the next generation of leaders by providing talented students financial support and industry exposure to ensure the future viability of the retail industry.
National Competition
Two IAPD students, Alex Marschman and Caleb Amundson, are semifinalists in the 2015 Steelcase student competition, NEXT, while a third student, Garrett Steinlage, from IAPD is an honorable mention. The competition had more than 700 students from 60 programs participate. Marschman and Amundson will travel to Steelcase University in Grand Rapids, Michigan to present their projects to the judges.
Wounded Warrior Project
Normally, graduate students in IAPD take on a school project. This year Associate Prof, Vibhavari Jani, had something bigger in mind. Jani partnered with Soldier Agricultural Vocational Education (SAVE). The organization's mission is to provide agricultural vocational education and healing resources to returning wounded soldiers. Our students designed a farming center for returning soldiers who are looking to go from military life back into civilian life.
Faculty Research and Presentations 2015-2016 School Year:
- Associate Professor Katrina Lewis attended the “Rotary Peace Symposium” in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The 3 day event included five plenary sessions with renowned speakers.
- Dustin Headley, Assistant Professor, was featured and interviewed on KCLY about his work in 3D Design.
- Associate Professor, Vibhavari Jani, was the key note speaker at the Environmental Protection Agency Youth Meet hosted by the Government of Gujarat.
- Vibhavari Jani attended the Arts in the Society Conference in London.
- Dustin Headley was the guest speaker at the 2015 Medical Design Conference at the Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation in Tampa, Florida. He presented “Engaging Empathy and Making: 3D Printed Prosthetic Skins”.
- Katrina Lewis attended the Summer Peacebuilding Program at Middlebury Institute for International Studies in Monterey, California.
- Kathy Ankerson, Department Head, attended the IDEC Conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
- Katrina Lewis was a keynote speaker at the Innovating Global Peace Building Conference in Thailand.
- Dustin Headley attended the Architectural Science Association Conference in Melbourne, Australia. He had three papers accepted for presentation. His paper, “Investigating the Digital/Analog/Cognitive Collision through Codified CNC Mill Watercolor Painting” was selected the best paper award and was published in a special issue of Architectural Science Review.
IAPD Student and Professor Collaborate with Veterinarians to Turn CT Scans into 3D Prints
Kelsey Castinado turned CT scans of animal bone fractures and deformities into full scale 3D prints that vets are using for teaching, to plan surgeries and to find more cost-effective ways to treat animal patients.
Prosthesis Project
2nd year students, under the direction of Professor Allan Hasting and Assistant Professor Dustin Headley, worked with individuals with prosthetic limbs to design and fabricate 'skins' for their prosthetic. The skin attaches to the prosthetic and each was designed with a specific individual in mind, taking into account their personalities. The final presentations proved to be emotional for the volunteers and students alike.
