Sonia is a coffee table designed to bring sophistication and dynamic feel to a space while fostering the sharing of wisdom and the creation of memories. Inspired by mid-century modern furniture and triangular design elements, it is named after my grandmother, Sonia, from whom I received the walnut wood. The walnut used for this coffee table came from a tree that once stood in her backyard. When she moved houses, the tree was set to be cut down and discarded, but my dad intervened and had it plain-sawn into boards instead. These boards were stored in my attic for the past 15 years. When I had the opportunity to design a coffee table, dedicating this piece to my grandmother felt like the perfect tribute. Additionally, the table’s form draws inspiration from an abstract owl sculpture, a symbol of wisdom. Fittingly, the name Sonia, with its Greek roots, also signifies wisdom.
