Memory cafes are a project funded by the Alzheimer’s Society; the profit from the cafes will go towards research
but their main goal is to “encourage all people to engage and cherish their memories”. A memory I deeply cherish
took place two summers ago when I went to a mosque for the first time. I was very nervous but my friend Maya
went with me and introduced me to dozens of women of all ages and backgrounds. They were all extremely warm
and welcoming and I felt like I belonged in their sisterhood. A few weeks later I converted to Islam; the inviting,
friendly community definitely made me feel more comfortable taking that next step in my life. As-salamu alaykum is
an Arabic greeting used by Muslims which translates to “peace be upon you”; it is commonly shortened to Salam,
“peace”. It is a greeting that unifies Muslims worldwide no matter the differences in ethnicity or language. We are
unified through our religion. We are unified through Salam.
