Native American sisters Emelia and Cedar have always been close, and they are seeking a further connection with
family and their Suquamish roots. Cedar works as a marketing consultant and seeks to host clients from a home
office. Emelia skillfully hand weaves and sells traditional Suquamish baskets and one day wants to pass on the
tradition by teaching classes. Both sisters need intentional spaces for their occupations as well as room to host
friends and family in their shared home. Located outside Seattle, Washington in Bainbridge Island, the given site
overlooks the Puget Sound to the south with a substantial slope and surrounding woods.
Emelia's interest in traditional basket weaving, and more specifically, the process of harvesting tree bark,
was the inspiration for this design. Using a knife to peel bark from the tree creates a unique form as it reveals the
trunk underneath. Likewise, the concept for this design seeks to peel the facade and private spaces away to reveal
the central living area, which is the most important and largest space in the home. By following a strict geometry,
prioritizing separate work and private spaces for each sister, and encouraging hosting with entertainment spaces,
"Peeled" combines concept with the client's needs to create a home.
