Designing gym environments to be inclusive and supportive for all individuals, including survivors of sexual assault, presents a multi-faced challenge. Traditional gym spaces in contemporary US culture emphasize physical fitness and aesthetic appeal. For survivors of sexual assault, entering a gym can evoke significant anxiety and fear, which may stem from a range of issues including concerns about personal safety, unwanted attention, and the challenge of reestablishing a sense of control and normalcy in a public setting. Addressing these concerns require a thoughtful and empathetic approach to gym design that goes beyond standard considerations of functionality and aesthetics. It involves creating environments that facilitate physical health and prioritize mental well-being and safety for all users. This includes implementing features that enhance privacy, promote a sense of security, and foster a supportive community.
