Sam Ladwig is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Interior Architecture and Industrial Design at Kansas State University. He studied engineering, business, fine arts, industrial design, furniture design, and received his BFA in Interior Design from the University of Central Oklahoma. He attended Indiana University’s Herron School of Art and Design where he earned a Master of Fine Art in Furniture Design. As an educator, he is focused on highlighting and documenting student success through external validation. Prior to coming to Kansas State University, projects from his courses won more than 120 awards in local, regional, national, and international competitions.
Sam’s professional and academic experience is wide-ranging. He has worked as a graphic designer, web designer, hi-tech project manager, business consultant, and even an ice sculptor. He played guitar for the industrial metal band Ministry during the 1992 Lollapalooza Tour. He was an audio and video producer for Rolling Stone Online in the late 90s. He has presented topics on design pedagogy at national and international conferences, and his furniture work has been published in regional and national publications. He has collaborated with designers, artists, illustrators, composers, and conductors to create and perform Flight of the Elephant an illustrated concert at academic and professional venues across the country. Currently, he is in the process of creating an animated short film from the premiere performance of Flight of the Elephant with his primary collaborators Dr. Brian Lamb of the University of Central Oklahoma, and Amy Johnson of the University of Lincoln in the United Kingdom.
