JC Harmon High School located in Kansas City, KS was built in 1973. Our design is create a better learning environment through three key goals: increased adaptability, increased engagement and sense of unity. Adaptability was tackled by creating informal learning spaces adjacent to formal classrooms, circulation and social spaces. To achieve engagement teacher spaces integrated into learning spaces + variety of work styles/atmospheres. Unity was articulated through a central media center / library + community space with surrounding flexible spaces. This studio was sponsored generously by the DLR Group interested in research on active learning environments.
