Duo is a portable sketching and work table that is intended to motivate users to embrace a variety of “duo” working styles: fixed/mobile, indoors/outdoors, and chair/floor. This variation and flexibility of interaction return the user to the fundamental, holistic idea of sketching as a free and relaxed way of transferring mind to paper. Using additive and subtractive forms as well as the complementary forms and concepts from Gestalt Psychology and the artwork of Oscar Reutersvärd, Duo is a truly unique table in meaning and form.

The purpose of this project was to introduce basic wood and metalworking skills as well as how to develop designed connections between the two materials. Through the prompt of a portable table, restrictions were developed for surface size, available steel shapes, and height. In order to make it portable, consideration for weight and handle accommodation were necessary.
