Interior Design

Shaping environments that influence human behavior, health, and well-being, students in the Bachelor of Science in Interior Design (BSID) at Kansas State University engage in a human-centered, research-based approach to design. Housed in the College of Architecture, Planning & Design, BSID is a CIDA-accredited undergraduate professional degree whose roots reach back to 1873, with continuous professional accreditation dating to 1982; the program joined the Department of Interior Architecture and Industrial Design in 2024, sharing in APDesign's studio-based educational culture. Through a process of inquiry, students learn to conceptualize, plan, and execute interior environments that respond to diverse users and complex social contexts, developing as designers through an eight-course design studio sequence that ladders understanding and application from simple through complex design problems — grounded from the first semester in theories of environment and behavior and reinforced by coursework in evidence-based design, environmental systems, and lighting. With a curriculum that integrates design research, technology, and professional practice — including hands-on studio learning, internship and practicum coursework, and an established international partnership with Inje University in South Korea, culminating in a mentored capstone project — students are prepared to enhance human experience, support well-being, and strengthen communities. Graduates leave ready to enter professional practice across residential and nonresidential interior design specializations and to pursue relevant professional credentialing.

The CIDA-accredited program prepares students for entry-level interior design practice, for advanced study, and to apply for membership in professional interior design organizations. The Bachelor of Science in Interior Design granted by Kansas State University meets the educational requirement for eligibility to sit for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification Examination (NCIDQ Exam). The Kansas State University interior design program is also accredited by National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

This handbook outlines the policies and procedures for the Interior Design (ID) Program in the Department of Interior Architecture and Industrial Design (IAID) in the College of Architecture, Planning and Design. The information contained in this document is to be considered a part of all syllabi for interior design courses.

2024 — 2025

• Job Placement: 23 of 23 May 2025 (100%) graduates were employed in the field by January 1, 2026.
• Retention/Attrition: Retention for the same cohort from 1st to 2^nd year was 77% (30). Attrition was 23% (9 students).
• Graduation Rates: 59% (23) of this cohort graduated.

2023 — 2024

• Job Placement: 29 of 31 May 2024 (95%) graduates were employed in the field or pursuing further education by January 1, 2025.
• Retention/Attrition: Retention for the same cohort from 1st to 2^nd year was 85% (33). Attrition was 15% (6 students).
• Graduation Rates: 79% (31) of this cohort graduated.

2022 — 2023

• Job Placement: 24 of 24 May 2023 (100%) graduates were employed in the field or pursuing further education by January 1, 2024.
• Retention/Attrition: Retention for the same cohort from 1st to 2^nd year was 73% (29). Attrition was 27% (11 students).
• Graduation Rates: 60% (24) of this cohort graduated.
