Healing Design | Designing a Pediatric Hospital Environment for Children with Terminal Illness

• 500,000 children are coping with life-threatening conditions in the United States every year (National Institutes of Health).
• Cancer is the second leading cause of death in children ages 1 to 14 (American Cancer Institute).
• 7 in 10 children with life-limiting conditions die in hospital (National Institute for Health and Care Research)

Design goals for this project included creating a sense of privacy and safety for familial comfort, while allowing socialization and exploration in communal areas, with a central emphasis on the importance of connection while allowing patients to feel a sense of control over their environment.
