APDesign offers multiple paths into the professions of architecture, landscape architecture, interior architecture, industrial design, regional and community planning, and community development. APDesign offers both on-campus and online degrees. On-campus degrees provide two different paths to master's degrees in five professional programs.
- Most freshmen and transfer students complete a Common First Year in Environmental Design Studies. This foundational year introduces the disciplines of APDesign and cultivates knowledge and skills for student success. After successful completion of the first year Environmental Design Studies, students pursue degree programs of their choice.
- Regional and Community Planning is an exception; these students may take a non-studio option in their first year.
- Interior Design and Real Estate & Community Development students follow a four-year curriculum that does not include the common first year.
- Prospective graduate students who already hold a bachelor’s degree apply directly to their program of choice.
- The Master of Science in Community Development is an online graduate degree.

Ph.D. Program
Environmental Design & Planning Ph.D. (4-years)
STEM-designated degree
The Ph.D. degree program is an interdisciplinary research-based degree program for students who already hold master’s degrees in a related field. Our doctoral students are members of the College at-large, rather than a particular department, allowing students to draw from the sizeable and wide-ranging knowledge of faculty from the university and all three of our departments: Architecture, Interior Architecture and Industrial Design, and Landscape Architecture and Regional & Community Planning.
This program is designed to prepare graduates to teach at the graduate level and/or conduct research. In addition to teaching, our graduates are well-equipped to undertake research to inform design and/or planning for governmental, environmental and planning agencies; developers; professional design firms; and international corporations that focus on environmental stewardship.
