Meadow Seating

Fall 2023

Adjacent to the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art on the south end of K-State's campus, this project aims to create respite space within the meadow to better allow admirers of the space to enjoy the natural area amidst the hustle and bustle of campus life.

The design intent of these seating elements relates to the iterations the bench will have in the meadow and with nature. The angularity is called out from the waving meadow grass in the wind. The floating structures found at the center and ends on the seating element allow for nature to take control and “fill in" the voids with vegetation, visually taking ownership of the seating element over time. Furthermore, the site location was picked to allow for varying interactions with the meadow itself, to sit on the outskirts and wait for someone or to fully immerse within.

Guided by Instructor Richard Thompson, fifth year furniture design students Emory Ast, Payton Castleberry, Allie Chambers, Haley Combs, Hannah Harris, Elizabeth Inmann-Hall, Hannah Klippenstein, Karis Sandin, Isabelle Ure divided into three teams, with each team addressing one part of the seating experience that is observed as one moves through and interacts with the meadow at various immersion levels.
