A study conducted by the Department of Education found that 45 percent of high poverty schools received less state and local funding than was typical for other schools. With such a disproportionate amount of children living in low-income households, it is crucial that everyone is given the opportunity to a successful future, regardless of income status. Design can be used to uplift an provide these communities with additional resources that would enrich and support those found in their local schools.
A supplementary learning communal center is proposed as a way to respond to the academic and non-academic needs of students and the surrounding community. In this communal center, spaces will allow students to have access to additional resources and support that are needed to succeed both academically and socially.
