Navigating Design Expo APDPro: Professional Communication/Special Topics/Career Transition

Join us for “Navigating Design Expo,” a powerful workshop designed to help you make the most of APDesign’s signature career event. We’ll cover what Design Expo is a high-impact networking and recruiting opportunity for students across design & planning disciplines. We will cover why attending matters, and how to prepare with a polished portfolio, a confident intro, and a plan for who you want to meet. You’ll also learn how to use your time strategically on the Expo floor so you can make meaningful connections and stand out to potential employers.

ALL first year APDesign students will receive APDPro: Professional Communication checklist credit. ALL second & third year APDesign students who attend will receive APDPro: Special Topics checklist credit. Fourth year RECD & 5^th year students will receive Special Topics or Career Transition Credit.

Fall and Spring Lectures

APDPro encourages APD students to fulfill their Fall and Spring lecture credits by attending the Ekdahl Lecture Series. However, if you were unable to attend and participated in another lecture that directly related to the design and planning profession or your educational development, please complete the form listed below to request credit for this APDPro checklist item.

Portfolio Basics (2nd Years)

Learn what industry experts look for in student work, how to effectively showcase your projects, and strategies to communicate your design process and skills. Perfect for Architecture, Planning, and Design students preparing for internships or future career opportunities. Students who attend will receive APDPro credit for the Portfolio Basics or Special Topics checklist item.

APDPro recommends attending Portfolio Basics events hosted by APDPro, as they are tailored to guiding you through the initial phases and ongoing development of your portfolio as a design and planning student. However, if you attended a lecture that addressed the fundamentals of building your portfolio and would like to request credit, please complete the Portfolio Basics Event Attendance Form to request evaluation of the event to receive credit for this APDPro checklist item.

Resume Building (2nd Years)

Resume Fundamentals for Designers & Planners

Build a strong foundation for your future career with Resume Fundamentals for Planning and Design. This workshop will guide students through the essentials of creating a professional, design/planning-focused resume. Learn how to highlight your skills, studio experience, and academic projects to make a strong impression on employers and internship coordinators. The session will also emphasize how professional development experiences can strengthen your resume by showcasing your transferable skills, leadership, and engagement beyond the classroom.

Register for Resume Fundamentals for Designers & Planners. Food will be served.

APDPro recommends attending a Resume Building event hosted by APDPro or meeting with the APDesign liaison in the Career Center, as these options ensure you receive tailored guidance on strengthening your resume as a APD student. However, if you met with another Career Center representative, faculty member, industry professional or attended a resume workshop specifically for design and planning students, please complete the Resume Building Event Attendance Form to request evaluation of the meeting to receive credit for this APDPro checklist item.

Design Expo

APDPro: Design Expo/Career Transition

Design Expo 2026

Fri Feb 27 2026 | 10am-3pm | Hilton Garden Inn

Design Expo is the College of Architecture, Planning and Design’s premier career fair where students from ALL disciplines have the opportunity to connect with 100+ firms who are actively recruiting for internships and full-time positions. Many firms offer same-day interviews from 3:00–5:00 pm. Registration is open now but not required. Students who attend will recieive APDPro credit.

Second year RECD, third year IDSN & 5 year program APDesign students will receive APDPro: Design Expo checklist credit. Fourth year RECD & 5^th year APDesign students will receive APDPro: Transition to Career checklist credit.

Transition to Career (5th Years)

APDPro recommends completing your Transition to Career requirement by participating in APDPro hosted offerings such as Mock Interviews, Design Expo, and Portfolio Reviews, as these experiences are tailored to preparing you for professional engagement in your career field.

However, if you participated in another event that supported your readiness for the transition into your career such as an employer-led workshop, career preparation session, or similar experience and would like to request credit, please complete the Transition to Career Event Attendance Form to request evaluation of the event for this APDPro checklist item.

Financial Planning (5th Years)

APDPro recommends attending a Financial Planning event hosted by APDPro, as these sessions are designed to support your understanding of budgeting, financial decision-making, and preparing for professional life in design and planning career fields.

You can also meet with Powercat Financial at any time and receive APDPro credit for the Financial Planning checklist item. If you meet with Powercat Financial, please complete the Financial Planning Event Attendance Form .
