Michael Grogan

Michael Grogan, AIA is an Associate Professor of Architecture, joining Kansas State University in 2017. Prior to this he practiced in a number of U.S. cities for over 20 years, founding Michael Grogan Architecture in Boston in 2008, a collaborative practice focused on adaptive reuse projects. For a decade he also taught at schools including Northeastern University and the Rhode Island School of Design.

His research and advocacy efforts have been focused on post-World War Two modernist architecture in the U.S. through the lens of preservation and building adaptation issues and histories. He has written a number of nationally- and regionally-published essays and articles, presented at various academic conferences, and has received related grants such as being twice co-awarded a National Park Service/Kansas SHPO Historic Preservation Fund Grant.

At Kansas State, Grogan is a Faculty Advisor for the highly-regarded Oz journal and, for many years, advised the college’s American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) chapter. Since 2018 he has coordinated the “Architecturally Speaking” lecture series and is on a number of committees and task forces within the College and University, including the Campus Planning and Development Advisory Committee. In 2023 Grogan taught in the college’s Italian Studies Program, later exhibiting over 600 sketches from the semester travels. In 2019, he coordinated and installed an exhibit Persistent by the 2017 AIA Latrobe Prize winners. Externally, he is Vice President of Plains Modern, a preservation advocacy organization and has served as President for both AIA Kansas and AIA Flint Hills. In 2023, he became and invited member of the Fay Jones School of Architecture (University of Arkansas) Dean’s Circle.

Recent awards include an AIA New York State design award and a University of Arkansas Alumni Honor Award for the Edershiem Residence in New York. He was also awarded the Commerce Bank and W.T. Kemper Foundation Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching. Grogan earned architecture degrees from Yale University (MArch) and the University of Arkansas (BArch) and is a registered architect in Kansas, Massachusetts, and New York.
